Quick reminder blog before I hop on a jet plane...

*Open to the public ~ No admittance charge! :) As this event is to benefit charity, they do ask that you purchase books at the event rather bring your own. If you bring your own, they ask that you limit it to one or two books and consider making a cash donation-per their website.

RomCon Recap!

So, this past weekend, I visited Denver, Colorado (well, sort of. We weren't exactly downtown, but close enough I guess) for the first ever Romance Readers Convention - RomCon. I had such a great time, I thought instead of rambling on and on about nothing like I usually do when I guest blog, I'd ramble on and on about my three days in Denver!

My Friday started at 3am...earlier if you count the hours my cat kept me awake. He saw the packed bags and just about lost it. I swear by Midnight, I sounded like Cartman from South Park - "Dammit, kitty I'm trying to sleep! Bad kitty! No kitty, this is my pot pie!" lol! Alas, I did manage a couple hours sleep and still made my 6am flight.

I had a layover in Milwaukee for almost two hours...just long enough to enjoy the breakfast of traveling champions - the Bloody Mary - at the airport bar. Mmmm. I also talked up my books to a few patrons, and even sold one to a fellow Bloody Mary enthusiast who downloaded it to her kindle. :)

After boarding a disturbingly small plane and a two + hour jaunt to Denver, we land in DIA...probably the worst airport on the planet. This opinion would only be reinforced later on my trip home.

Having been told that the hotel did not have a shuttle service, I hopped on a Super Shuttle.....headed downtown, an hour out of my way! Ack! Thank God I spotted my hotel's shuttle on the way, and that the driver was nice enough to go completely off her route and drop me off at the correct hotel. Which reminds me, I need to call someone about a refund...oh, anyway...

With an hour to spare, I check in and book it down to my first panel, "Anti-Heroes You Hate to Love." A fun panel with loads of great authors like Cindy Gerard, Jeaniene Frost, Jo Beverley, Lori Wilde and more! We paired off in groups and visited up close and personal with the attendees. Jessa Slade and I migrated from table to table of readers, chit-chatting about what makes a great anti-hero, the hottie Raylan Givens from 'Justified' and numerous other topics that came to mind.

At 2pm I sat the "Question and Answer chat with FF&P Authors" panel along with the amazingly talented and sweet, Christine Feehan, Nalini Singh, Jessa Slade and CL Wilson. I think I managed to say one coherent sentence during that hour. However, I can't vouch for the other ones that babbled out of my mouth. ;) How I ended up on that panel, I'll never know. But it was an absolute honor to chat with those ladies.

Christine, being the doll she is, was nice enough to tolerate me going "fan girl" over her and posing for a picture with me. She even bought a copy of SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE and asked me to sign it for her!! I about died.

At 3pm, the next panel I sat on was probably the most fun I've had at a conference workshop..."Build a Hero" again with Jessa Slade, who at this point no doubt thought I was stalking her. *smiles* Our table, the paranormal/urban fantasy table, came up with the uber scrummy dark fae hero, Shikar. We were robbed by the historical hero for the grand prize of best hero, but we definitely built the better book! Just look at those copious notes we took! Pretty impressive, huh? :)

After this, I had a few moments to change before heading down to the bar for cocktail hour and dinner and the awards ceremony. A costume ball followed, you can see some of us below in our attire - I'm in the long black dress.

I was a Victorian Vampire (minus the fangs because they annoyed me) with a Zombie baby. He is one of my favorite Halloween accessories and was quite the hit - you can see a pic of him below.

Saturday, I had breakfast with the lovely Jen (who is pictured above in the blue-ish corset) and then headed on down to the book signing. It was set up a little odd, what with the books not being on the tables beside the authors. But even with the snafus, I counted signing almost 20 books. Yay! :)

2:30pm I sat the Were-Squares panel, with Nalini Singh, Cathy Clamp, Carrie Vaughn & CL Wilson. It was a fun question and answer game and everybody walked away with books.

I did memory lane at 3:30pm - a table area set up where readers could come over and chat with authors. Unfortunately, the signage wasn't the best. Fortunately, I got to chat with one of my favorite authors ever, Terri Brisbin for almost an hour! :)

Thirty minutes later and it's cocktail hour and dinner again. I sat next to the lovely and funny, Carly Phillips, Monica McCarty, Veronica Wolff and Jami Alden. This time dinner was followed by a Black & White Masquerade. Here's a dorky pic Carly took of me in my costume:

haha, seeing that picture never fails to crack me up! But in my defense, my leg is in flamingo posture so she can see my platform boots - honest!

After another night of partying, Sunday rolled around. I sat with some more wonderfully, awe-inspiring authors for the "Speed Date a New Author" event, had a great catch up chat with Wendi Darlin' at Author Avenue and then it was off for the horrible DIA airport again. The lines were unGodly long and the flight overbooked, but I made it back to my corner of the world relatively unscathed. My cat was so excited to see me, my Sunday night ended much like my Friday one - with me doing my best Cartman impression as I begged my cat to be quiet so I could sleep. ;)

All in all, I had a fabulous time at the RomCon conference, saw some old friends and met SO many great new ones. I can't wait to do it again next year!

I'm excited and nervous and sick to my stomach all at once...sort of like this little guy: I have a feeling July is going to whooooshka right by and I won't know what hits me. I just hope I remember some of it. :)

Early reviews for SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE are slowly making their way to me and I have to say, I have been floored by each one. It's so wonderful to know that the numerous vibrant and tortured characters who've been bugging me to write their stories are resonating with readers too. I'm going to post some of the reviews here in no certain order, starting with the one I just received today.

This was a fantastic book. Meagan Hatfield has created a dark and perilous world filled with non-stop action and intense emotion. From the first page I was drawn in and this fast paced story of vampires, dragons, and ancient prophecies would not let me go! The choice of dragon-shifters as the vampires' enemy was original. Declan is even able to half-shift, a human body with dragon wings and tail, which Alexia enjoys during their hot love scenes! This story is definitely a DARK paranormal romance. The descriptive scenes of torture and battles were intense. The characters were well written and I could feel their emotions - anguish, fear, love and joy. I enjoyed the secondary characters too. I can see the possibility of at least three future stories based on Declan's sister Tallon, Alexia's mysterious cousin, and others. I am looking forward to reading more from this talented author.

I can't stop watching this!

This clip is like crack for a romance author/movie addict/gamer such as myself. No joke, I've probably played it a dozen times in as many hours. It looks gorgeous. The song is hypnotic, (as are Jake's abs) the scenery is stunning, (like Jake's eyes) the dialogue swoonworthy, (*dreamy sigh* like Jake's hair), the special effects uber cool, (almost as cool as those straps of leather hugging Jake's rock hard biceps) Oh, and did I mention how friggin' hot Jake Gyllenhaal looks as Prince Dastan? ;) Everytime I see him, I keep thinking of Declan, the hero from my book SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE. He just fits that character to a tee, especially the hair. If they ever make my book into a movie (haha - yeah right) I'll go totally Anne Rice on the producers if they cast anyone else but Jake to play Dec. lol!

Birthday parties, concerts and knights - oh my!

So, my week of craziness has finally come to a close. *phew* It was a long, but fun-filled week of birthday celebrations for my kiddos.

Here is a quick journal of the week's events:

It started with a Pump it UP birthday party for my son, who turned eight this week. *sniff, sniff* He's getting so big! (Sidenote - I'm SO getting one of those thrones for my next birthday.)

I followed that long, semi-exhausting night with a 30 Seconds to Mars Concert, VIP style - a present for my now 13 year old daughter. *no sniffels for her, I'm stoked she's getting older* :)

In reality, the concert was more like a day long event, since we left at 1pm and got home at 1am.But it was a flippin' blast! Doesn't she look happy? :) The boys all told her happy birthday, and Jared Leto gave her a hug!

Oh, and Jared Leto jumped on me! :) Now, how many times in your life can you say that? (well, for those of us who aren't Paris Hilton.) hehehe See, here is the picture to prove it --->>

Then, over the weekend, I took a jaunt to Chicago, where we saw the dinner and tournament show, Medieval Times, (after a lot of playing in the hotel pool of course.) The dinner was great. Being a new rabbit eater, I had the vegetarian meal for the first time and it was amazing! Yummy roasted veggies and a portabella mushroom cap with beans and rice. Mmm.

On the entertainment side, the show was great! Both my daughter and I were given flowers by our knight...

My son had a new tunic and a dagger to wave around, so he was happy as could be...And our knight actually won! That never happens when we go there.

Now, I could post pics of the tourney, joust or the
horses, but come on...do you REALLY want to see those? Me neither. *grin* Instead, here are some pics me with the hotties...erm, I mean knights. :)

And yes, I am sitting on their laps. Personally, I think they like me there. *grins*

Aww, aren't they all just so cute? I wish I could take them home with me. :)

Anyway, I guess that's my week in a nutshell. When you look at it here, it doesn't look crazy at all. But believe me...I'z tired and need a nap! Too bad tomorrow is Monday. Ugh!

...this is the trailer for one of my favorite movies of all time...King Arthur (director's cut, not Walt Disney's cut)

This trailer (as friggin' awesome as the movie is) still kinda sucks. Nothing is as good as the movie.

If you haven't seen it, rent it. If you haven't rented it, buy it. It is one of the best movies of the decade and quite close to being one of the best of the century.

And not the Purple Rain variety. *smiles* I saw this trailer and now officially cannot wait to see this movie! Call me crazy, but ever since I saw Jake G in Brokeback Mountain, I've been enamored with the guy. (He was great in Proof too, one of my favorite movies. :)

Now, I know what you're thinking - "A Disney movie, based on a video game that was cool like ten years ago...really, Meagan?" But a few years back, I remember thinking - "A Disney movie, based on a mediocre ride at their theme-park?" and I think we all really enjoyed that little flick. So who knows? The trailer looks pretty sweet. And although the heroine's 'Angelina Jolie from Tomb Raider' voice impersonation is already getting on my nerves, Jake's biceps...erm, I mean the effects look stellar. *grin*

What do you think? Do you have another movie you can't wait to see this summer?

I am beyond thrilled to show off my cover for my July release, SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE! ...get at least somewhat excited for what used to be my favorite show of all time. Here is the sweet looking new promo for the final 5 episodes of Prison Break:

I think it looks awesome, especially the Sara/T-Bag showdown. But I'm not too thrilled with the whole "evil mom we all thought was dead" storyline. However it's much better than the "brain tumor" soap opera-esque storyline.

Truthfully, I'm getting kinda sad that I won't get to see these guys every week. But at least I have Fox's new show, FRINGE, to ease the pain - I absolutely adore Walter!

Christmas Ride Blog Event!

I don't know about you, but nothing gets me into the holiday spirit like a good Christmas movie.
Although "A Christmas Story" is always good for a laugh and "A Wonderful Life" is a classic, my personal favorite would have to be "Home Alone."

There is something about little Kevin McCallister that just speaks to me. A smart, caring, intelligent 8 year old boy who feels overlooked by his busy and harried family, acts out, says things he doesn't mean and has to live with the consequences. Watching him grow, fend for himself, buy groceries, order pizza (oh, and toss paint cans at the bad guys) is just a great ride of a movie.

Now, how about you? What is your favorite Holiday movie?

Hope and love arrive in the form of an Elfin warrior. Hanarom Avindaul has spent years fighting to save his people and lands, while defending the innocent and helpless. Although he has rescued many fair damsels, Kaiya is different from any woman he has ever met, mortal or immortal. There is no denying his heart, and he could never leave her to the horror that has become her life.

A Magical Encounter is romance-meets-fantasy at its finest. The villains were beyond psychological and social rehabilitation, and the lovers are captivating without being syrupy sweet. The bad guy stalks Kaiya every step of the way, and you are often on the edge of your seat scared for her while hoping that Hanarom will administer a major beat down to the scumbag.

Although Hanarom is an Elf, he’s depicted as another race in the sense of the Lord Of The Rings characters. I might even suggest that he would give Legolas a run for his money on sex appeal. He and Kaiya form an instant connection through their strong character, love of nature and sense of honor. The trials and dangers they encounter really bring them closer. It’s refreshing to see Kaiya save and defend Hanarom nearly as often as he does her. In so many different ways, Ms. Hatfield depicts them as equals, and does a great job of uniting two very different people together by playing up their similarities. The love scenes are passionate, sultry and sensuously written.

Overall, A Magical Encounter delivered on adventure and romance, and more than earned its HEA. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a successful melding of these genres.

OMG, I am hyperventilating in joy right now! First we hear there is a season 4 of PB and now this!! I don’t need a Christmas or Birthday present for the next 5 years now, I’m so happy! LOL!

In one crazy unexpected twist, Sarah Wayne Callies is coming back to Prison Break next season!!!

Yes, even after her character, Dr. Sara Tancredi was unexpectedly beheaded last season. Apparently she had a contract dispute with 20th Century last year but that’s all been resolved.
In the fourth episode of season three ("Good Fences"), Sara’s head was presumably decapitated, placed in a box, and sent to Lincoln Burrows. So how can she be written back into the series?

HERE IS THE ACTUAL INTERVIEW:

Sarah Wayne Callies — whose rather ugly contract dispute with producers led to her apparent decapitation last October — is returning next season. Full-time. As Dr. Sara Tancredi. Head and all. Seriously.How? Why? When? WTF?! All legitimate questions. Good thing I just hung up with Mr. Answer Man (aka executive producer Matt Olmstead).

So... I take it that wasn’t Sara’s head in that box....

Matt Olmstead: Yeah, that wasn’t.But initially it was supposed to be her head.

What changed?

Olmstead: What changed was.... once we realized that the emotional hook of Season 3 was going to be the death of Sara, when we didn’t get the actress to do it, as soon as we wrote it and shot it, we realized that there was actually a way she could still be alive. Lincoln glanced at the head in the box for a split second. That could’ve been anyone. He wasn’t about to pull it up from the hair and inspect it closely. And then we were fairly careful thereafter of references we made to that and who took credit for it and what was seen or heard, and we left it fairly [vague]. But initially when we realized that we never actually saw the character get killed, we just had that knowledge in our back pocket and moved forward with the narrative as we intended. Which was: she’s out of the picture, Michael’s [feeling guilty] and Lincoln is freaking out because if they did that to her, they could do that to his son. It really gave us a real push for the season.

Don’t you think that was a little unfair to the audience — particularly fans of Dr. Sara — to jerk them around like this? They had every reason to believe she was dead.

Olmstead: I don’t think it was unfair, because it gave us some real juice storytelling-wise — it put teeth in the antagonists. Obviously they were now capable of killing somebody. It also gave us a couple of episodes where Lincoln withheld the information from Michael, and that gave us conflict with the brothers. But also, what were we really going to do? Were we going to see Sarah Wayne Callies tied to a chair for 13 episodes? And then if she broke free, what is she really doing? It was almost a disservice to that character to keep her around last season. Certainly, we could have put her on a cruise ship and she’s off sailing away. But we felt that if we’re going to lose that character, why not get the most drama out of it? We didn’t look at it in terms of [us] trying to tell the audience to go, you know, do something to themselves.

What role did the fan response to Dr. Sara’s death play in her return?

Olmstead: It factored in. It was kind of a confluence of events. We saw on the message boards that a lot of fans were wondering if she really was dead. And then that led to conversations of, "Well, what if she isn’t?" But then we put that on the back burner and moved forward with what we had to do, because it wasn’t anything that could be dealt with right then. And then when we came back after the strike and we realized that we were not going to finish Season 3... we creatively decided to blow it all out, jump forward in the timeline and get a fresh start. And so, when we pitched that, a lot of those elements remained, but we were still looking for that emotional core for Michael. We were kind of exactly where we were in the beginning of Season 3, which led to her demise, quote unquote. So we went back and revisited [the idea of bringing her back to life]. And once we started talking about it, it was mentioned again that fans are still wondering about her. And when people who are fans of the show — and of Sarah — are asking, "Is she really dead?", what they’re saying, essentially, is, "I hope she’s not dead." And then it became a kind of groundswell.

But then you have to get the actress to agree to return, which I assume was no easy task given the bad blood that seemed to exist last season.

Olmstead: There wasn’t bad blood on our side. It was a business decision. I understood where she was coming from in that she was given a provisional assurance that she was going to be a part of Season 3, but we had to revisit Season 3 a couple of times in the pitch stage in order to get it picked up. Fox was still looking for that emotional hook. Once we came up with the idea of her character going away, that gave us what we needed to push things over the edge. And although we were comfortable with it, she wasn’t. I also understand on a personal level how it factored in. She was pregnant at the time and looking forward to giving birth, and this wasn’t something she was interested in doing.

What changed for her that she’s willing to come back now?

Olmstead: She and I spoke a couple of days ago at length about what we have come up with creatively for her character.... We’re jumping ahead a little bit in the timeline. There’s a little bit of a mystery period for all of these characters in terms of how they got where they are and what happened to them. And we have some interesting things for her, and she responded to them creatively. We won’t just be picking up where we left off with her character. And she won’t be a damsel in distress waiting for her hero to return. There are some complicating factors involved with her character and things that she’s looking forward to. So we spoke about it, she thought about it, and we made a deal.

No hard feelings, then? Everyone’s moving on?

Olmstead: Moving on. She’s a very smart lady, and we’re all adults here. It was never personal. It was a business and creative decision, and we’re absolutely moving on.

Can you say how she’ll be reintroduced next season?

Olmstead: It’s going to be about figuring out what happened to her during that mystery period [between the end of Season 3 and the start of Season 4], and how she and Michael deal with it.

How much time will have lapsed?

Olmstead: About a month. Enough to jump past expected events that we left hanging at the end of Season 3, answering those things, but also moving forward.

And Sarah is onboard for the entire season?

Olmstead: Yes.

The love-hate relationship between these two wonderful people, along with the fiery passion that burns up the pages, is all consuming. I was unable to put this one down. Although at times I found the situations the characters had to withstand a little distressing, I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an exciting, sexually charged romance because this has to be one of the best I have read. Hats off to this great author. I look forward to reading more of her stories in the future.

Prison Break is killing me!!!

Okay, I'm about to go off here...don't mind me, I'm just venting. :-)

Now, I don't really watch TV. Well, not on a weekly basis, (and I never blog about it.) The whole thing has become so unpredictably annoying it became difficult to emotionally invest myself in a show, only to have it go on some random hiatus for a year, change time slots, (or worse) change days.

However, Prison Break is the exception. Or was. Until they killed the heroine and love interest - Sara.

Now, I read that because she was pregnant in real life, she didn't want to work - wanted to be at home with the babe, etc. Well, I am hoping and praying that the actress had her kid, realizes that life at home with a toddler is monotonous, begs to be written back into the show and they allow it. I was a stay at home mom and after two years, I was pulling out my hair for any adult interaction that didn't require Playdough or Lego's. And I mean, the show is basically a soap opera - characters have returned from the grave before - it wouldn't be the first time. It's totally doable.

While I'm going off on my diatribe here...the whole female prison spin-off concept with the lead actress being Michael's new love interest is thoroughly insulting! No, no, NO!

Words are failing me, so I'll just have you look at this vid of Michael learning about Sara's death.

Now, tell me what does he have left? If Sara was not the love of his life and his soulmate is indeed this new lady, what reaction could he possibly give her? What corner of his heart is left for her?

I'll tell you. Nothing.

He spent all of his emotions, all of his heart on Sara. Meaning anything else would be unbelievable and pointless or render him an absolute ass in viewers eyes.

His character - as it has been outlined from the beginning - is guarded and intelligent. No way would he go for another person caught up in the "company's" net. He would have learned his lesson. As Sara once wrote - he would "know better."

Like I said, I hope that they bring her back. I am a romance author after all and it kills me to not have a "Happily Ever After" for the hero and heroine. But if the writers, in their "wisdom" decide to have her remain dead, I sincerely hope they know better than to give him a new love interest. It would demean anything and everything that Michael ever said or did...and THAT my dear bloggers, would be a tragedy. He is truly one of the best characters to hit the television in a long time and it would be a shame to see him go down like that.

Okay, I'm done. Phew! It's nice to have a place to get that off my chest. Now, back to my dragon hottie...until next time...

I am SO excited for the September 27th release of JR Ward's "Lover Unbound" I can hardly stand it! Vishous is my favorite brother, (right now anyway) and I can't wait to see him get his happily ever after.

So, to assuage my Brother addiction, I'm going to post pictures of how I visualize each character, starting with the Blind King himself, Wrath.

Still sweating...and not just because it's 100 degrees outside...

I'm happy to post that Sven is still crackin' his whip and keeping me sweating. So far, I've written almost 30,000 words, two synopsis and did revisions on a 300+ page manuscript. Woot!! {{Go Sven, go Sven, go, go, go Sven}} I think even after this is over, I'm going to keep him around - for purely inspirational purposes of course. *winks*

Oh, and it is really that hot here in hell...er, I mean Wisconsin. (Hey, even Kevin Smith considers it hell, people!) I tell ya, I am *so* a Cali girl. When it's this danged hot, I prefer the dry heat, and need to be by a pool or the ocean with a cold beer or blendie drink in my hand. LOL!

I hope everyone else is staying cool.

Sweating with Sven - Check in day

I've written 4580 since Sunday when I signed up. Not bad. I figure as long as I get 2,000 words a day, I won't complain. *grins*

Sunday's total's were dismal seeing how I wasn't home all day. I worked from 8am until noon, meet a friend for lunch at Panera in Madison, drove home like a maniac, making it to the co-ed league softball game in time to bat, drank a victory beer (we won 18-3), wrangled the kids from the park, went to a BBQ, came home at 9pm, showered and crashed because I have to be at work at 4:45am. Amazingly I wrote almost 500 words in the morning. But that's not 2,000 so I have to make up for that sometime this weekend.

My A-ha moment in this challenge so far? Well, for this week it's been remembering to tote around a notebook. I write long hand throughout the day, and type it in at night when I get a chance. (Yesterday I wrote on the floor next to my son while he played army guys. LOL!) It's more time consuming no doubt, but between work, the kids summer activities, etc. it's better than telling myself 'I don't have time to sit at the computer right now' and doing nothing at all.

So, how are all the other challengers doing? Is Sven whipping your wip into shape? ;-)

Moving is hell!!

Or purgatory, I haven't really decided yet. It was hot, painful and utter torture so I believe it qualifies as both. But thank the Gods it's finally over!! I thought I was going to have to sacrifice a goat or bribe my friends with mass quantities of beer to finish by today...but we did it without having to do either. DH and I have successfully transplanted our two kids, cat, puppy, hermit crab and tons and tons of useless crap to the new house. Phew! Other than dropping a box of floor tile on my toe, smashing my ear and the numerous cuts, scrapes and bruises - I came out of it unscathed.

Now to unpack. Urgh. First room to be done...why, my new office of course. I painted it pumpkin seed (which is burnt orange, not white like actual pumpkin seeds- don't ask me why) and the wall already boasts my giant LOTR poster. There are wall to wall books and it's right off the kitchen and living area so I can keep an eye on the children and the pooch at the same time I type. What was once hell will soon be heaven...and I can't wait.

I released this article in my Spring Newsletter and then SpecRom Online posted it on their website and in their newsletter. But I've been seeing a lot of discussion on this very topic on some loops I'm on and thought I'd post it here for anyone who might have missed it! Hope some of you fantasy writer's find it helpful. :-)

World Building for the Fantasy Romance

Narnia. Middle Earth. Atlantis. Camelot.

When you hear the names of these fantasy worlds, your mind swirls with images of the inhabitants, environments and most of all, how they all fit perfectly within the story. That is successful world building. When done well, it can place your fantasy novel on the keeper shelves of readers everywhere.

Fantasy is described by Merriam-Webster’s dictionary as: "imaginative fiction featuring especially strange settings and grotesque characters.” I have to whole-heartedly disagree. To me, fantasy is more aptly described as a place where anything is possible. Unlike other genres, like say science fiction, fantasy does not have set boundaries or rules. You don’t have to abide by the scientific laws and technical or planetary details of the age. You can pretty much write anything your mind conjures.

There could be a magic spell keeping your hero and heroine apart, like in the movie LADYHAWKE. A small, peace-loving farmer set out on a life-threatening quest to destroy an evil ring, as in LORD OF THE RINGS. Or perhaps even a little boy who discovers he's a wizard and is whisked away to a special school to hone his craft. (I don’t think I have to name that book.)

Each of these fantasy examples took us to wonderfully exciting new worlds and immersed us in their respective stories. All three are different, but exceptional examples of how to successfully build a world, specific and unique to the story line/characters you're working with.

Nothing to it, right? Well, it's certainly do-able.

The first thing you want to consider is what kind of fantasy you are writing? There are four common sub genres found in fantasy romance novels, Epic being the broadest of them all. With an Epic fantasy, the world you’ve created will be at stake in a good vs. evil type situation. Both the Heroic and Sword & Sorcery sub-genres evolve from this grand, Epic beginning. In the Heroic tale, the hero sets out to save the world, thus the story becomes more about him/her than the actual act of the world being saved. (Think Frodo in the Lord of the Rings) Sword & Sorcery stories are usually set in some ancient setting, and concentrate on wizardry, swordplay, dragons, etc. (Think King Arthur, Xena, Harry Potter.) Last, the Historical fantasy will take an actual event, place or person, but add magical or supernatural elements. (Think Ladyhawke, Beauty and the Beast) Though some may argue there are more fantasy categories than I listed here, in romance we have a paranormal genre, which covers things such as werewolves, ghosts, witches, vampires and so on.

Okay, so you've chosen the specific sub-genre for your fantasy. Now it's time to create your world. The thing to remember with world building is to keep it simple. This is where it can get sticky. You don’t want to go overboard and make every element of your novel strange and overly detailed. This will only jar the reader, making it harder for them to suspend disbelief and continue reading. Instead, the goal should be to ensure the world you’ve created feels believable and comfortable.

One way to do this is to keep certain elements within your story familiar.

For example, if you have a centaur warrior as your hero, have him enjoy a cold beer while watching the two moons raise overhead. The beer keeps him real. It humanizes him in the readers mind, making him relatable. Harry Potter may be learning how to fly a broom or fight a fire-breathing dragon, but he’s doing these magical, crazy things in a school. A normal, familiar setting we are all at ease with.

Ideally, you want even your most bizarre creatures to have some human characteristics otherwise readers won't be interested in them. Perhaps there are demons from the underworld in your story. Try having them addicted to things like chocolate, tobacco or even air conditioning. Of course, the pitfall with this technique is making the world you create too similar to our own. The idea is to show the reader objects, ideas, morals, notions they can recognize and relate to, in the milieu of the new and exciting. Balance is key.

Another important factor in world building is to not only set rules, but abide by them. Stay consistent with the ideas and elements you’ve created. If the hero is a merman and the heroine a human, you have to find a logical and plausible way for them to be intimate. Maybe on certain moon cycles he can change form? Or maybe they have to be submerged? If your heroine is a witch who grows weak whenever she uses her magic, you cannot have her fight the villain in the end without showing any signs of fatigue—unless you show a reason why. As always, you don’t want to "cheat" the rules and have things "just happen". Readers are smart. You should know, you're one of them! If you cheat them, they'll put the book down. (Or throw it across the room.)

Last point…names. Use ones that fit the story time, place, feel and characters. Do not just pick some exotic, hard to pronounce name because it's different. I recommend saying the name aloud. If it trips you up, change it. Also, pay careful attention to the masculine and feminine. You don't want the readers guessing a being's gender any more than you want them stumbling over their name. And unless you are writing a time-travel fantasy, be careful not to name one character Xielnain, and another Steve.

Above all remember, however you decide to create and organize your fantasy world, make it as familiar and true to life as you can. The more ordinary it is, especially in its eccentricities, the more extraordinary and memorable it will be to the reader.

Has it really been so long since I posted here? I have four blogs and keep losing track!

My hubby bought me a puppy for mother's day! He's so cute. It's a litte (for now anyway) black lab. We named him Bear. (all together now..."Awww") I'm going to post a picture of him as soon as I get one. He's still with Momma until Saturday, then the mad scramble to collect puppy poop will be on at the Hatfield house! But, that's why I had two kids...Eventually doing dishes, laundry and yard work will be distant memories. hehehe

As for writing, I have two more scenes to polish on historical and then I'm putting her to bed, so to speak. THE MARQUIS & THE MISTRESS, are ready to see the world! Not to mention the paranormal I've plotted out is screaming at me to pen...I've really got to get a hand held recorder so I can "write" while I drive. LOL!

Well, yesterday I sent out press releases to my hometown paper - The Orange County Register in California, as well as one to my local paper - The Capital Times in Madison, WI. Guess which one responded first...

Yuppers, California. Now, this struck me odd, but a friend of mine said it's the "briefcase syndrome." This theory is that the people you live around could give a fig about you. But you get nothing but great press from your hometown. Huh? Kinda bass ackward is you ask me, but what do I know? :-)

Expanding on this newfound knowledge, I intend to send out press releases to Ft. Collins, CO. where I went to college, and St. James, MN. where my grandfather's kin have all been since coming over from Norway before WWII. If this theory is true, I should hear back from both of them before Madison. Will keep you posted!!

Hey all...Just finished a fellow LIW- Dawn Thompson's THE WATERLORD, and let me tell you...it's wonderful! I couldn't put it down kinda wonderful!

I had been looking forward to this book ever since finishing her first paranormal for Dorchester THE RAVENCLIFF BRIDE. So, naturally Amazon had to go and lose my order! I received it nearly a month late, but let me tell you...IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT! Dawn has crafted a very sensual, otherworldly tale that seamlessly blends her natural flare for the Regency era with a superbly inventive fantasy realm.

However, I believe, (and have told her many times), her greatest gift is creating these wounded, yet perfect to die for hero's any woman would swoon for!! Klaus is no exception. He is one sensual, sexy man...err fey, who must mate with a mortal woman in order to procreate his line. He's done it before. It should be easy what with his charm and good looks. However, his chosen conquest this time is our heroine, Becca. A woman who stirs him like no other. And while he has ensured a cottage not far from the waterfall from which he draws his strength, it can do nothing to save him from losing his immortal heart.

I highly recommend this wonderful read. You'll fall in love with Klaus, cheer on this couple through the villains-both of this world and the other-and bathe in the sensually vivid imagery and passionate love story that is THE WATERLORD.

OMG, I so totally LOVED this movie!

I must say...Hans Matheson is just a yummy dish. Though, I have to admit the movie hit close to home, since I have a little boy. Nearly broke me down in some parts. But it was worth it to see the parts with Hans. :-) If you haven't seen "Half Light" yet, rent it! It went straight to video last week, so you can get it for a mere $4 from your local video store.

If you still need a cattle prod to rent it, here he is...

I'll repeat. A writer's life is all about the waiting.
We toil, we sweat, we "birth" our "babies" and then like proud mama's rush to show them off to the world. But instead of numerous e-mails, cigars and congratulatory slaps on the back, we get...nothing. (Well, maybe you have an agent who strokes your ego a bit, but other than that you get zilch in those early stages.)

The publisher, you proudly send your baby off to, says they received your precious manuscript and will getting back to you in "a few weeks." Those weeks turn to months. You begin to go stir crazy. The self doubt seeps in. You start having to battle your urge to send them check up e-mails nearly every day. After all, RWA's PRO booklet says it's okay to nag them after a month or two has passed... STOP! Don't do it. All of this is quite normal, and has no reflection on your ability. (Or your baby.)

While punctuality is a common, no, expected trait in the average workplace, it's not in the publishing industry. Well, until you've signed on the dotted line at least! :-) Then it's a whole other story! You see, while you may believe your baby is the brightest, most original, fun-loving piece of work the world has ever been gifted, it's just one of hundreds parading about the editors office. Choosing...heck, finding TIME to choose can be stressful! It's a job I, for one, wouldn't relish having.

So, what's the cure, you ask? Easy. Start making another baby. I mean, that's why you started writing anyway, right? It wasn't for the money or fame. It was because you were born a story teller. So get back to work! Put all that negative, nervous energy to work on your next project, and before you know it, you just might get "the call" when you least expect it!

Okay, the weekend flew by and I don't even remember it!
Did I party a little too hard, you ask? I wish. {{sigh}} But no. I worked over 22 hours this weekend. And no, not straight--Leanne doesn't "own" me yet!! HEHEHE
However, I DID submit a short story proposal for Highland Press's summer anthology ONCE IN A BLUE MOON...So if things go well, she just might!

As for my writing this week...I MUST finish THE MARQUIS AND THE MISTRESS! I'm soooo close to the end, I can taste it. Unfortunately life has been mocking me by making me work, work, work!! But today, ah Monday. A day most dread, happens to be my ONE day off this week. So I'm going to spend it doing the work I enjoy...Writing!

Yes, it's true...I FINALLY have a cell phone. Can you believe the jump to light speed I just made? From the 80's to the 90's in just one day! I never thought I'd like, want or need a cell phone, but low and behold, I played with that little bugger for like FOUR STRAIGHT HOURS on Christmas! I put info. for people I haven't talked to in two years into that bad boy, for the shear fun of it! Now all I have to do is find a ring tone that doesn't make me nauseous, because the ones that came with the phone are awful! :-)

I can't believe I never heard this until now!! One of my all-time favorite television shows, KINDRED: THE EMBRACED, (about a clan of vampires struggling to co-exist with humans and each other), was cancelled after one, knock-out season and I never understood why...until today. The hottie vampire prince Julian Luna, portrayed marvelously by actor Mark Frankel, died in a motorcycle accident that same year, making it impossible for the story to continue.

For those of you, not fortunate enough to have seen the show, here is a picture of the late, talented actor Mark.

The entire season of the Kindred is available on DVD at Amazon. There are many familiar faces and wonderful performances, in a genre one hardly ever sees done, much less done so well. I highly suggest you check it out...it's worth every penny.
